To me this quote means that he wasn't trying to be the best coach or neither was he trying to be awarded for being one. Leaving a legacy means handing down something to someone and he wasn't trying to do that. Dean Smith was only trying to do what was right and he was appreciated by his team. What he did was retire and that can always be passed down to future generations. Dean Smith chose the right and did the right thing for his team.
